Is This The Best Way To Make A Law?

Susan Walsh

The Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. In April, justices will hear oral arguments that could lead to a landmark ruling on same-sex marriage rights.

This spring, the U.S. Supreme Court will take up two questions of same-sex marriage: whether states should be permitted to ban it, and whether they must recognize same-sex marriages from other states.

The role of the court in deciding this issue has been the scholarly focus of Murray Dry, professor of political science at Middlebury College. He's our guest to discuss how the law around same-sex marriage has evolved, and what it says about the way our legislative and judicial branches operate.  We examine the difference between legislative action and judicial review, and what questions the Supreme Court will hear about same-sex marriage.

Also in the program, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard. He is in Vermont to discuss electric power that his province exports south, a Lake Champlain management plan, and the overall trade relationship between Quebec and Vermont. We sit down with him to talk cross-border politics.

Broadcast live on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
