VPR will celebrate 40 years on the air next year, and Betty Smith Mastaler has been with the station since the very first day.
She started out in commercial radio and was one of the first women on the air in Vermont. She worked as a volunteer with Ray Dilley and Ray Phillips to put the station on the air in 1977.
VPR President Robin Turnau sat down with Betty in the StoryCorps mobile booth to talk about how VPR got started and how far the station has come.
Their conversation was one of dozens recorded during August while the mobile booth was at the Echo Center in Burlington. StoryCorps is a national initiative to record and collect stories of everyday people. Excerpts were selected and produced by VPR.
