People in Vermont's Jewish and Palestinian communities are expressing both cautious optimism and lingering concern over the news of a short-term truce between Israel and Hamas.

鈥淭his is a humanitarian catastrophe, and we need action now,鈥� say Sens. Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch.

The Vermont senator held up the nomination process for Dr. Monica Bertagnolli to lead the health agency in order to make a point about drug prices. Now, he says he'll vote against her.

According to a recent CNN poll, two-thirds of 鈥淒emocratically鈥� leaning voters say they don鈥檛 want the party to nominate President Joe Biden for a second term in office next year. Pollsters surveyed about 1,500 voters in late August.

"If you think that the suffering of the Palestinian people long-term is good for Israel, I think you are sorely mistaken," Sanders said on the Senate floor.

All three members of Vermont's congressional delegation have strongly condemned Hamas' attack against Israel.

The bill would invest in community health centers and training for more doctors, nurses and dentists in rural areas.

Sen. Sanders says he's worried about public backlash if the government shutdown were to happen.

The bills would make it easier for workers to form a union, provide seven days of sick leave to all workers, and include new enforcement tools to prosecute cases of gender wage discrimination.
