Voices From Tropical Storm Irene

VPR/Melody Bodette

This week, Vermont Edition is reflecting on the drama, the challenges and the triumphs that people around the state experienced in the storm’s aftermath. Here is a sampling of the sounds and voices from the days after the storm.

Dave Moore, the Town of Newfane's Emergency Management Director, has been at the firehouse fielding calls since Irene struck early Sunday.

Highway worker Eric Austin said the Mad River cut under the bridge abutments.

Amber Downing says she had to climb down a ravine to get to her house from the ruined Dover Road in South Newfane.  She's pretty sure the house isn't structurally sound.

A house near hers is sitting in the middle of the road, surrounded by a tangle of downed trees.

Lisa Sullivan owns a bookstore in Wilmington, one of 11 communities in the state still isolated from supplies and emergency repairs because of washed out roads and bridges.

Rutland Mayor Chris Louras says Mike Garofano, who ran the city's reservoir and was a municipal employee for over 20 years, went back during the torrential downpours when Mendon Brook was violently rushing over its banks, to triple check the status of his reservoir water system.

Jason Boyd and friends load up ATVs with loaves of bread and diapers for their second trip into the area around Route 100 in Stockbridge cut off from roadways.
