Despite the partial shutdown of the federal government that has furloughed 800,000 government employees nationwide, the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) relating to F-35 basing was filed on time today.
After , officials announced it would be filed with the federal government on Oct. 4, starting a 30-day waiting period. After that period, the Secretary of the Air Force may decide at any time where to base the F-35 fighter jet.
"Yes, it was filed with the public registry," said Capt. Erika Yepsen of the U.S. Air Force. While civilian workers have been furloughed, other military personnel are still working during the shutdown and were able to submit the study on time.
Burlington International Airport is one of the bases in consideration and is listed in the EIS as a preferred location for the jet. Critics of the plan worry the new jet has not been sufficiently tested and could pose a safety risk to Burlington-area residents. Supporters say it will bring jobs to the Burlington area and reinforce national security in the region.
Based on the current timetable, the Secretary of the Air Force may make a decision about F-35 basing any time after Nov. 3.
