Vt. Veterinarian Trains Ugandan Farmers

This week, Vermont Edition is shining a spotlight on the work that people from our region are doing in foreign countries. Some are traveling for short stints as volunteers, others are living and working abroad. But all of them are lending their skills and goodwill to make a difference.

Today we hear from Stephen Major from Westminster West. He's a large animal veterinarian with the Green Mountain Bovine and Equine Clinic in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire, and he was inspired by his daughter’s work with the Peace Corps in Uganda. Major decided to go to the East African country himself, with Veterinarians Without Borders.

"How do you identify a healthy, well-growing animal and how do you identify an animal that’s not growing well. Also, how do you determine how much more a healthy animal is worth than a sick animal?"

Major spoke with Vermont Edition about his work teaching Ugandan farmers about the basics of veterinary care to help boost their profits.

Vermont Edition's interview with Stephen Major is part of a VPR project that invites people from our region to share their experiences helping others abroad.  .
