A new regional climate change resolution says maintaining ecological connectivity is an important strategy to slow climate change. Forests like the Willoughby State Forest, pictured here, serve as habitats for wildlife.

New England governors and eastern Canadian premiers last week

It contains strong language that encourages responses to climate change and directs local agencies to make renewable energy a priority.

also highlights the need to recognize forest 'connectivity,' or the idea that regional forests are interconnected and provide vital pathways and habitats for wildlife. It acknowledges that regional forests may not fall within the borders of just one state or province, and encourages collaboration on conservation efforts across borders.

Vermont's Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with other agencies, helped to draft the resolution's language.

John Austin, land and habitat program manager from the department, helped to provide science-based guidance for the principles of the resolution. He joined VPR to discuss the process.

Annie Russell was VPR's Deputy News Director. She came to VPR from NPR's Weekends on All Things Considered and WNYC's On The Media. She is a graduate of Columbia Journalism School.
Alex was a reporter and host of VPR's local All Things Considered. He was also the co-host and co-creator of the VPR program Brave Little State.
