The base lodge at the shuttered Ascutney Mountain Resort will be cleaned up for asbestos two years after it was destroyed in a fire.
The South Windsor County Regional Planning Commission will be giving $30,000 to Ascutney Outdoors, the nonprofit managing the former ski area property.

The funding for asbestos cleanup comes was awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency; the funding is for mitigating sites deemed hazardous.
Tom Kennedy, the executive director of the South Windsor County Regional Planning Commission, says the funding will abate the small amounts of asbestos in the burnt-out building.
鈥淭he goal being [to] put a much smaller lodge where that building sits today,鈥� he told VPR Monday.
The demolition of the base lodge is expected to start at the end of January.
